She began training as a cellist when she was just four years old and made her debut with the Cleveland Orchestra at the age of thirteen.
She earned an undergraduate degree in Russian history from New York City's Columbia University.
She is the daughter of pianist Vivian Hornik Weilerstein and Cleveland Quartet violinist Donald Weilerstein and the sister of conductor and violinist Joshua Weilerstein. She and her parents formed the Boston-based Weilerstein Trio.
