His first major recognition in running occurred in 1995 when he was awarded the silver medal in the Spanish Half Marathon Championship. He then earned the silver medal at the Spanish Cross Country Championships in 1997. While still running professionally, he also earned several degrees including a Bachelors in Physical Activity and Sports Sciences, a Masters in Communication, Sport Management, and Organization of Sport Events.

He is known for having won the Gold Medal in the Spanish Cross Country Championships in 2002 as well as the Gold Medal in the European Athletics Championships in Munich in 2002 in the 10000 meters event.
