Famous for his works Dance, Family, Andrea, and Gathering, this 20th-century American artist is perhaps best known for his nude sculptures. Over the course of his artistic career, he taught at both the Illinois Institute of Technology and Arizona State University.
After training at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and briefly serving in the military, he completed his schooling at the University of Chicago.
His work That Which Might Have Been: Birmingham 1963 was inspired by the racially-motivated bombing of a church and the resulting, tragic deaths of four children.
A native of Des Moines, Iowa, he spent his late childhood and teenage years in Evansville, Indiana. His two marriages -- the second of which was to Ruth Holland -- produced a total of six children.
