About

Democratic Party politician who served from 1965 until 1971 as a United States Representative from California's thirty-eighth district. Subsequently, he held a six-year term as a United States Senator. While in the Senate, he penned a piece of anti-trust legislation known as the Tunney Act.

After earning his bachelor's degree from Yale University, he entered the University of Virginia School of Law. He subsequently joined a New York City-based legal practice.

He was born in New York City to Polly Lauder Tunney and professional boxer Gene Tunney. His first marriage to Mieke Sprengers, resulted in three children; he later wed Kathinka Osborne in 1977.
