Competing for Team U.S.A., he won gold medals in the 110-meter hurdles events at both the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia, and the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, Italy.
While a member of the North Carolina Central University track and field team, he won three Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) titles and two National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) championships.
He coached the track teams at Yale University, Western Illinois University, and Grambling State University and also served as an assistant track & field coach at the 1976 Montreal Summer Olympics.
He spent his early days in Laurel, Mississippi, and lived in several other U.S. States before passing away in his mid-fifties in Erie, Pennsylvania.
