He spent much of his early life living out of his suitcase after his parents passed away and went on to perform in Gene Krupa's band and gain notoriety for other collaborative work.
He became a musical director after having a stroke, but helped revive the ball room dancing and swing movements in Atlantic City by booking musicians.
In 1960 Hambro married singer Lynn Michels and they raised two sons.
