Known best as a creator and producer of the Woodstock Music and Art Festival, Lang also founded a music label called Just Sunshine Records and produced numerous music events and film projects through his Michael Lang Organization.

After briefly studying at New York University, he established a tobacco store in Coconut Grove, Florida, and subsequently produced the Miami Pop Festival of 1968.
