After serving in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during World War II, he wrote for a Tennessee newspaper called The Oakridge Times. He then began freelancing for several popular magazines, including Esquire and Cosmopolitan.
He was considered an honorary member of the 'Rat Pack,' a group that included Humphrey Bogart, Frank Sinatra, and other prominent performers.
He was married five times; his third wife, Estelle Parsons, became an Oscar-winning actress. He was the father of Eddie Gehman Kohan, co-creator of the hit TV series, Will & Grace.
He co-starred with Jerry Lewis in the 1964 film, The Patsy.
