American historian and author who wrote biographies of U.S. presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower and Richard Nixon. His other popular historical works include D-Day, June 6, 1944: The Climactic Battle of World War II (1994) and Undaunted Courage: Meriwether Lewis, Thomas Jefferson, and the Opening of the American West (1996).
He attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison and played on the school's football team for three years. After returning to his alma mater to receive his PhD in history, he became a professor in the history department at the University of New Orleans.
His popular work, The Wild Blue, investigates World War II-era aviation.
With his first wife, Judith Dorlester, he had a daughter, Stephenie, and a son, Barry. Dorlester died in her late twenties, and Ambrose later married Moira Buckley, whose two sons and one daughter he adopted.
