Former practicing cardiac surgeon who developed Holobiotics, a nutrition system designed to promote health through the maintenance of healthy microbes in the body. He founded The Center of Restorative Medicine in Palm Springs based on his research and has authored several books on the subject.

He was a professor and the chairman of cardiothoracic surgery at Loma Linda University until 2002.
